So I have been spending this afternoon rediscovering the gorgeousness that is Nelly Furtado's "All Good Things (Come to an End)." What do you think is the difference between an artist you're a fan of and an artist you only like? I was thinking, even though I like most of her songs and even own all of her albums so far, I wouldn't consider Nelly Furtado one of my favourite singers, and I'm not sure why that is.

In other news, today when I was walking to the library, two snakes slithered across the path in front of me. I have seriously never come across snakes randomly in the wild before!! This was a new experience for me, lol.

That may be the only Nelly Furtado song I know (and like).

Also clearly this is a sign that you need to get into MGS.

Do you remember at all my first successful NaNoWriMo? The one about C and Joaquín? I listened to "Try (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thhSkqVis7Q)" on a loop basically the entire time I was writing that. xD

Good question! Although for me it's easier to distinguish since I don't actually listen to that many people. I tend to stick with one band/singer and play thier songs constantly without getting sick of it for very long periods of time.

If it's an artist I just like, then I'll probably just listen to one song and not bother getting an album. Mostly I'll know their songs due to airplay..not me specifically following them (as I would if I was a fan)

I definitely tend to stick with just one group/singer at a time, too. Actually I think I've probably gone weeks just listening to the same song over and over again. But lately I have been trying to round it out a bit, haha.

And yeah, if I'm a fan of someone I'll know about their upcoming releases like months in advance, but if I'm not, then one day I'll hear their new song on the radio and go, "Oh wow, is that ___?" xD

Yeah, this is the closest to I got to an answer when I was thinking about it. Good to see someone agrees! :) I wonder what brings about that difference, though?

Fan - I support them in their music career and whatever they do in their personal life.
Like - I like their songs. That's all.

Yeah I like Nelly's songs but not a fan of her. Meaning I don't give a crap what she does with herself and I certainly wouldn't defend her. So yeah I guess that's the difference between being a fan of an artist and liking an artist.

Yeah, that seems like a pretty good answer. I wonder what brings about that difference. Like, what would make you more interested in one artist's life than another's? Hmm ...

I feel like if anyone was really bashing Nelly's music I would probably defend her or at least step in to say "Well, I like it!" But I remember once they tried to create a local Nelly Furtado Day and my reaction to that was OH NO YOU DON'T. :|

It has to do with their public image too. If I don't like their personality, or how they put themselves out in front of the public, I won't be a fan.

I wouldn't defend Nelly but since she's Canadian and all, I'm proud of how far she is in the industry... but still not a fan lol.

Artists I am a fan of are fairly transparent in their musical output... usually they have quirky personalities... their music means more than just the surface quality. Their music is timeless. If that makes sense.

That's a great question! I think that the difference between being a fan or just liking an artist has a lot to do with the way their music effects you. Like for example, I'm a fan of Michael Jackson, but I only like Kanye West. (His music that is.) Perhaps I shouldn't of picked Michael because he's higher than any other artist I'm a fan of, but still.

I am effected by a few of Kanye's songs, but not at the same level as I am with Michael's, or as many. I think it has a lot to do with the person themselves too. (Which Michael and Kanye are GREAT examples. LOL I'm definitely not a fan of Kanye as a person. LOL)

Do I make sense? I hope so because my sickness is effecting me. @_@ lol

Late to this post, sorry ... I love that Nelly song. The Loose era was disappointing for me (I got too attached to Folklore), but I still enjoyed it a lot. (I love your icon, btw. She's so cute.)

Great question re: artists. I feel like there are a few categories for me.

Hardcore: I like their music and who they are, and they really inspire me. I look into the histories behind their work. I want to know everything about every song. (Madonna, MJ, Sakamoto Maaya, The Beatles, George Harrison, Miyamoto Shunichi, Utada Hikaru, Shakira, NEWS, K8, etc.)

Less hardcore: Same as the first category, but with less devotion. The artist resonates with me, but not quite as much. (Vienna Teng, Gackt, Shiina Ringo, Saitou Kazuyoshi, Nelly Furtado, Rufus Wainwright, Ryan Adams, Yuzu, Desserts Xuan, Ayu, etc.)

Casual: The artists whose music I enjoy casually. I might like them as a person too, but I just don't get obsessed, or feel the need to get every song, every version, every piece of inforomation. (Morning Musume, Arashi, Sarah McLachlan, etc.)

Conflicted: They have some good material and I want to like them, but there are various things which make it hard to be dedicated even as a casual fan. (Katy Perry, Matthew Good, etc.)

I try to be balanced in things, though, no matter which category. I don't really like viewing things or people as black and white, and I don't believe in 'stanning' or whatever. Idk. Hope this makes sense. Sorry it was long. I like thinking about and talking about fandom. XD
