Just 'cause I'm short, I know.

Clearly I need to talk more about the celebrities I like, because whenever one of them dies I feel the need to explain every little impact they've had on my life in order to justify why I am upset. Well, whatever; some of you may be kind enough to remember my random Monkees posts of old, or the icon I made in ridiculous anticipation of PotC2, and some of you may have noticed my dad telling me on Facebook today that he couldn't quote "Daydream Believer" lyrics at me even when I'd given him an open because we did exactly that less than a month ago. Long story short, I discovered the Monkees' show when I was young enough that I don't remember how old I was, I have thought them awesome ever since, and waking up to the news that Davy Jones had died was a pretty terrible way to start my day.
CHEER UP, SLEEPY JEAN
Okay, okay, two more boring facts from my boring life:
- The Monkees' greatest hits album is currently number five on Amazon's top selling music list. That album was also one of the first CDs I ever owned.
- If you were to ask me what I was doing when I heard that Princess Diana had died, my answer would have to be that I was spending my evening watching a Monkees marathon on TV that I had been looking forward to all day.
I have a lot of respect for shows that are unashamedly ridiculous, haha.
I don't know what happened to make "Gonna Buy Me a Dog" the way that it is, but the first time I heard it I laughed till I cried. (Uh, I should probably admit that I was like ten years old. STILL!!)
Unfortunately it seems the Monkees have a reputation as a talentless boy band. Well just because they had a zany TV show definitely does not mean they aren't talented! The above is a video of them singing a Spanish song called "Ríu Chíu" a capella, and pulling it off so nicely that I'll admit I didn't believe it was actually them when I found an MP3 of it on KaZaA. (Clearly I wasn't a believer, hur hur.)
And other Monkees songs I enjoy despite the lack of Davy vocals, haha:
I don't know why, but whenever I think of the Monkees, "(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone" is the song that always pops into my head.
I'm afraid there are probably a lot of people now who only know "I'm a Believer" via its appearance in Shrek. Well I will always prefer the original. <3
I can sing parts of "Goin' Down" only because I spent many hours practicing it hahahaha.
"Randy Scouse Git" may well be my favourite Monkees song even though it's totally bizarre, has a rude title, and I have no idea what it's actually about.
And, of course, the forever classic theme song:
RIP, Davy.

Date: 2012-03-01 06:11 pm (UTC)Gonna Buy Me a Dog is hysterical no matter how old you are.
Randy Scouse Git is about Micky's trip to London where he did a lot of drugs and hung out with the Beatles. And then did more drugs. Thanks, Micky, for giving us this ridiculousness. that is awesome.
no thanks for Head, though, any of you.
