now for something completely different

The mail started up again recently which means I have a bunch of new photos of my sponsored children to show you! I've only mentioned one of these kids before, whoops. x) Also, I apologize once again for my complete inability to use a scanner~~~
Recap: I sponsor several children through Children International.

Claire is eleven and lives in the Philippines with her parents. Her father works as a farmer. I started sponsoring her in late November, and earlier this year I sent her a small Special Gift donation. According to the report, she received a bag (although it looks like she got more than one, as well as a couple of umbrellas!), clothes, three pairs of footwear, groceries, and school supplies.

The report continues: Claire and her family were thrilled and delighted by the surprise but very timely donation. Her parents expressed their earnest gratitude for such a generous donation which they consider a big relief and special treat to the rest of the family members.

Through the donation Claire was able to buy selected school supplies including a school bag in preparation for the upcoming school opening this June. Claire is now assured to have her school things ready. Some clothes and footwear were also procured to replace the old clothes and those that do not fit her anymore. The groceries will be mainly used for their daily meals. Some may be reserved for the family's future quick fixed meals or snacks.

I think it'd be really awesome to visit my sponsored children in the Philippines while I'm on JET, but so far all I know about travelling from Japan to the Philippines is that it's a five hour flight from Tokyo to Manila. x)

Mary is nine and also lives with her parents in the Philippines. Her father is a driver and she has four older siblings. I've sponsored her since last August but I've only briefly mentioned her once before when I wrote about one of the awesome letters she sent me. I sent her Special Gift at the same time as Claire's; Mary received two backpacks and a bunch of groceries. A snippet from her thank you letter: There was a time I cried to my mom ... I am pleading for a school bag especially for my books, sad to say she hasn't got enough money to spend, instead she bought me a plastic envelope with a beautiful print of cartoon characters. Then a week ago, she asked me how many bags I want for my school things, I laughed! I thought she was joking come to think of it, "a school bag for school vacation!" But she added I am going to use it this coming school days, and it is provided by you ... I was really surprised. ... From the special donation you gave, we were able to buy two school bags for me, a sack of rice, and assorted groceries.

And from the report: The entire family became truly excited when the gifts were delivered. Mary was overwhelmed and proud of the new things she has. ... From the previous year 2010-2011, Mary used a plastic envelope where she placed all her school things when going to school. With the special donation she was able to buy a school bag of good quality which she can proudly use this school opening, in June. Such will make all her school things properly kept, set and organized. The family was accorded with grocery items to provide food on the family's table.

I've been sponsoring Katya for just over a year now. She is eleven and is so far my only sponsored child in Chile, where she lives with her parents and one younger sister. She also writes really great letters. :) When I saw that her parents were both listed as "unemployed" on her family report, I e-mailed CI to ask if the family would be interested in an Income Generating Project. The reply came back that her father was bringing in a small income working as a handyman, but new tools would definitely help the family out.

With the donation I sent, the family was able to buy an electric drill, a jigsaw, an electric brush drill, a rivet gun, tin scissors, a set of six screwdrivers, a hammer, and pliers. Don't ask me what's what in the pictures because I can pretty much only pick out the scissors. xD

The report says: The child and her mother were thrilled with the donation and said it will be very useful for them. Katya said that her father will be the happiest. ... The gift will be a huge help for the family. Katya's father will be able to work on his own and get an income to improve the living conditions of the family.

A snippet from Katya's letter, which unfortunately didn't get translated very well: These things arrived from heaven because my dad is unemployed and he will be able to make furniture. With the screwdrivers he will be able to screw on the doors and he will be able to do his job with all the tools. We hope to not let you down. My father will work very hard to be able to support our family and without your help he wouldn't have been able to work on the thing he knows the most about now that he's out of work.
Meanwhile, Rocio's fundraiser is still going! Thank you so much to everyone who's donated. <3

Date: 2011-07-10 11:46 pm (UTC)Also, one of my friends went to the Phillipines over Golden Week this year. He had an awesome time, but it can apparently be pretty dangerous. Like, he went with some Phillipino friends, and apparently they made a point of never leaving him alone, dangerous.

Date: 2011-07-11 11:03 am (UTC)I've actually posted about all but two of them. And I started sponsoring the most recent one way back in February, so I feel like I am finally doing okay at my plan to not start sponsoring any more until some of the ones I already sponsor graduate from the program!!
That's cool! Do you know what areas of the Philippines he went to? I imagine some parts would be more dangerous than others, but yeah the Wikitravel page (when I looked at it years upon years ago) didn't make it seem like the safest country ever. Well, I kind of figure that I have five sponsored kids there, so if I'm able to spend a day with each of them then factor in travel time and that's pretty much a week already! Not much time to wander around by myself haha. :P

Date: 2011-07-11 11:41 pm (UTC)I'm pretty sure he was mostly in Manila, but he said that white people traveling alone are likely to be kidnapped- so I would worry more about the traveling between your kids' families than anything. >.>
