So after failing at life the past two days, I am very happy to report that today was much more better! By some miracle I woke up just fine at seven o'clock (how is it that I wake up easier after three hours of sleep than after eight hours of sleep??) and was perfectly on time for the ESL class I'm volunteering in. And oh my god it was the BEST. EVER. The teacher is so nice and I love her teaching style and how she obviously cares for and respects every one of her students; having never been in an ESL class before, I think I'd somehow imagined them to be very stressful, but this one is so not! She asked another volunteer and I to come in and help out because it's a fairly large class and she was having troubles getting around to all of the tables and answering everyone's questions, so I pretty much just sat at one table for half the class and another table for the other half of the class and helped the students as best I could. It's a lower level class, and this morning they began with a review of how to form questions, so I was able to handle it. x) The second half of the class was spent reviewing the words for different family members and different jobs, and I helped the students with an activity that I actually really liked! They were given a blank family tree and then a bunch of clues to figure out what the names of the family members are and how they're related to each other and what their jobs are. Like one of those word puzzles where you have to figure out who's sitting beside who at the table or whatever. xD And not everyone had the same clues so they sometimes had to ask the other students things like, "Who is the doctor?" And all of the students are so nice and awesome and seem really into learning English, so yes. It was an awesome way to spend my morning and I can't wait till next Thursday when I get to go back~~~ xD /omg sarah you are such a nerd
After the class ended, I wandered over to the Study Centre since I was there anyway haha, and oh man it was so busy! There were students lined up outside the door and when the teacher in charge of the Centre saw me sneaking past it she was so happy to have another volunteer. xD Apparently eighty-six students came through during the two hours it's open during the morning, wow! The afternoon was rather slower though, I think she said that only about twenty students came in. I got interviewed for like the billionth time (this assignment is due tomorrow and I can't lie, I don't think I'll miss it - although it was pretty awesome today when a student asked me to spell "Calgary" for him and I totally spelled it WRONG) and also I taught someone the difference between "chill out" and "lighten up." And then I taught another someone what the Super Bowl is, despite the fact that I am the least qualified person to do so! xD
SO that is the story of how I did six hours of ESL today and plan to do the same next Thursday. :D
IN OTHER NEWS, NaNoWriMo is once again upon us! Who among you has yet to inform me that you are participating? :D I am totally having another go with the novel that's already crashed and burned on me three years in a row (and I can't even lie I am STOKED), although this time I am letting myself switch novels if I have to. brb breaking the only two rules NaNo has~!
In other other news, my reading of the most bizarre novels I have ever read continues apace; Olympos just passed the Bechdel Test when Cassandra managed to convince Andromache not to kill her. Does ... does that really count? D:

Date: 2010-10-13 12:02 pm (UTC)I feel like in theory something like NaNo should be easier when one is unemployed, but seriously the only times I have won NaNo have been in years when I was crazy busy and had so many other more important (supposedly) commitments! But hopefully having a lot of time will work in your favour. :D I have had this idea of mine for way too long, NaNo needs to just start already so I can write it! xD
