Quick recap: I sponsor several children through Children International, and have recently begun helping their families set up small businesses (what CI calls Income Generating Projects) in order to increase their income. I finally received the report on Ma.Fe's IGP, and so it's time again for another update! (omg why do I fail so hard at scanning I couldn't get the contrast right in any of these pictures what the heckkkkkk)

Ma.Fe is twelve, the youngest of four siblings, and she lives in the Philippines with her parents. When I requested information as to whether or not her family would be interested in starting an IGP, the reply came back: After consulting with Ma.Fe and her family, the family is interested in starting a pedicab business where Ma.Fe's father would drive the pedicab. The cost would cover the pedicab and registration. I thought this was interesting because in my Indonesian Literature class we watched a documentary that focused on a pedicab driver. Pedicabs seem to be a common form of transportation in Southeast Asia. (That Indonesian Lit. class kind of frustrated me when I was in it, but now I miss it quite a bit! It was actually really awesome to study a country that I otherwise only rarely hear about.)

I love getting letters from Ma.Fe because she's like me, practically writing a novel every time. xD I won't post the whole letter, but here's one part that I found interesting: You gave a source of livelihood to my parents that had been a great help for my family, especially in augmenting our day to day needs. I for one am no longer worrying where to get my fare for my daily travel. So it seems this pedicab won't only provide income for the family, but will also allow Ma.Fe's father to drive her to school himself, which sounds like it'll be a good thing!

The report reads: Ma.Fe and the whole family were all very delighted and excited when the gifts were delivered! Ma.Fe's father feels very glad and thankful. He feels proud having his own pedicab unit.

Having his own pedicab unit, the father's income will be higher because he will no longer have to give a daily remittance to a pedicab operator. Family's income will be augmented, enabling them to address their daily basic needs. Ma.Fe's father will approximately earn $11.2 per week. Truly, this income-generating project funded by Ma.Fe's sponsor is very helpful for them.

And there was something written in the "Additional Notes" section, which I don't think I've ever seen before: The family inquired from the municipal office and they learned that no more registration is required for the pedicab. Thus, the remaining funds were utilized for purchase of pedicab accessories such as spare parts, radio and rugs. The Field Officer will frequently revisit the family to monitor how the IGP of the family is helping them; and if it is really going well, etc.

Yay! :)

And so ends what will probably be my last sponsorship entry of 2009, unless the next report I'm waiting on surprises me and arrives early. xD If you haven't already, please take a second to visit Keyly's Fundraiser, which, thanks to another awesomesauce donation, is now 33% of the way to completion! :D
