For some reason, lately I feel like writing a lot of random posts about music I shamelessly enjoy. Having said that ...
HOLD ONTO YOUR HATS AND HATERS TO THE LEFT
THIS IS A ~*~MAKI GOTO APPRECIATION POST~*~
~
So when I first learned of Morning Musume way back in the old school days of the Internet, for the longest time I was only able to download two videos: MoMusu's "Renai Revolution 21," and Pucchi Moni's "Chokotto Love"!
Pucchi Moni - "Chokotto Love"
(Conveniently enough, Maki is the one in the preview picture.)
I CANNOT BEGIN TO TELL YOU HOW OBSESSED I WAS WITH THIS VIDEO
LIKE, FOR MONTHS I WOULD JUST SIT THERE WATCHING IT OVER AND OVER AGAIN
Also, as I recall, this was the first Japanese song I looked up the (romaji) lyrics to (or perhaps "Yakusoku wa Iranai" was the first, but either way), and I remember being so confused! Like I was looking at a bunch of words that I absolutely could not make sense of. For some reason I feel this was an important experience in my life as a student of foreign languages.
Pucchi Moni will forever and always be my favourite Morning Musume subgroup. I pathetically feel like I will never quite be okay with the way the subgroups all got messed around with in 2002. :(
~
Pucchi Moni (now with added Yossie! <3 ) - "Baby! Koi ni Knock Out!"
baby, koi wa endless!
When I discovered this song, I was only slightly less obsessed with it than I had previously been with "Chokotto Love." Oh my gosh though, watching this video is making me pine so hard for the days when H!P was little more than INEXPLICABLE RANDOMNESS! Check out the zombie dance at the beginning, hahaha. LOVE IT!
~
Pucchi Moni - "Pittari Shitai Xmas"
Um okay so it is really weird to me that I can remember back when this single was brand new, haha! xD I am linking to a performance instead of the PV because I LOVE THE COSTUMES SO MUCH OH MAN and also the performances of this song are the most adorable things ever that I don't even care how shallow I am being right now, hahaha!
This song is the song that taught me the word "hotondo," and is also the source of the "L O V E LOVELY [name]" chant you'll hear during certain songs at H!P concerts, hahaha.
~
Maki Goto - "Ai no Bakayarou"
I was going to post a couple Morning Musume videos here, but after that Pucchi Moni spam I feel like there is enough people-who-aren't-Maki in this post, so let's skip straight to Maki's first solo single! The lyrics to this song were the subject of my first attempt at transliterating, but my biggest memory of this song is listening to it before school every day during the second semester of ninth grade, because for whatever reason I just felt sooooo nervous about school that year and the awesomeness this song really helped to calm me down. I still really love this song, it has such a cool sound to it. The video does it no justice!!
~
Maki Goto - "Uwasa no Sexy Guy"
Bang!
I ACTUALLY REALLY LOVE THIS SONG. Check out how it's all James Bond and stuff, el oh el! Also, I'm pretty sure the talking pig traumatized me the first time I watched this PV.
~
Maki Goto - "Daite yo! Please Go On"
Welcome to one of my favourite Hello! Project performances of all time! (Uh, ignoring the swimsuit-like costumes.) This is Maki, Nozomi Tsuji, and the three members of v-u-den performing one of Maki's songs. I can't even tell you why I like this clip so much. I think I just watched it over and over at a time when I really needed to be distracted from rl issues, and so it definitely had the opportunity to really grow on me, hahaha. I didn't even like this song before that! xD
~
Maki Goto - "Yokohama Shinkirou"
This is quite possibly my favourite of Maki's H!P songs. I have definitely listened to just this song over and over for entire plane rides, ngl.
~
STOP!
SHUFFLE TIME!
Nochiura Natsumi - "Love Like Crazy"
This is one of Maki's solo performances of a song she originally recorded with Aya Matsuura and Natsumi Abe. I am not linking to that PV because I have always kind of hated it. But I love the song! It's so bizarre and I have no idea whether anyone else will like it, but whatever, to me it is very awesome. xD
~
Maki Goto - "Glass no Pumps"
This was the single that kind of officially began Maki's change in image. And I love this song I cannot even tell you how much! I do feel like I shouldn't admit to loving new!Maki (lol, "new" as in "since three years ago") as much as I do, because seriously, every other shot in this video is a close-up of her breasts. I don't know, I haven't bothered to think about this any more critically than that. Maybe all of my H!P-based fandom is just one big anti-feminist guilty pleasure, but at this point I feel I am (a little reluctantly? idk idk) okay with that.
~
And then she left Hello! Project, joined Avex, started having more of a hand in creating her music, and started releasing some of my favourite J-pop evarrrr.
Maki Goto - "Fly Away"
This video came out after Maki had been on something like a year-long hiatus from releasing music. Plus it came out when I was in Japan, so when I returned I was really shocked to discover it and its AMAZINGNESS! (lol, it was definitely not a big enough release that I saw it advertised anywhere in Japan.)
~
Maki Goto - "Lady Rise"
I love parts of this PV and hate other parts of it, but oh man, this song gets stuck in my head perhaps more than any other.
~
STOP!
MAKIRA TIME!
Shakira - "Hips Don't Lie"
MAKI GOTO SINGING "HIPS DON'T LIE"
OH CRUEL COPYRIGHT, LEAVING US WITH ONLY A FANRECORDING OF THIS PIECE OF POP CULTURAL BRILLIANCE
Also, Tsunku needs to be in the background of every song ever, y/y?
~
And now for the two live performances that are so awesome they inspired this whole post!
Maki Goto - "Hear Me"
IIRC, this was one of Maki's first performances after signing with Avex, although I didn't even realize there was video of it until today. I enjoy how I get a "Want Me, Want Me" sort of vibe from this performance right up until the end, and then the last few moves remind me of the dance break in "Remember the Time," hahaha. Well, no matter what this was inspired by, I LOVE IT!! (If anyone's interested, when Maki's Sweet Black album was released, this song was retitled "Mine," and omg I am so obsessed with it right now.)
~
Maki Goto - "Candy"
THIS PERFORMANCE ROCKS WHY DOESN'T SHE DO THE WHOLE SONG LIFE ISN'T FAAAAAAAAAAIR
In conclusion: brb ordering the Sweet Black album and fully expecting it to become one of my favourite J-pop albums ever. Here's to a long and awesomesauce career with Avex! It's so weird to think I've been a fan of Maki for eight years now, haha. Hopefully this entry makes up a bit for all the entries in which I didn't mention her. xD

Date: 2009-11-26 05:59 am (UTC)... But to be honest I watched that video once and that was it for the rest of forever! I didn't care much for Maki until I made a friend who loved her like I do Konkon. Now I can't stand comparisons between her and Koharu/Manoeri. XD I need to catch up on her avex stuff though.

But yeah, I'm not a huge fan of that video. D:
And what! People are comparing Manoeri to Maki?? They're both H!P soloists, but apart from that I'm not sure what other similarities people could be seeing! :P
Actually, I often see Reina compared to Maki. I don't mind that one because I love them both, but I guess it doesn't make a lot of sense, either. xD
