Wow, I can barely believe that PotC3 is so close! Thirty-two hours! I'm so excited and it's going to be so awesome but afterwards I am going to be sad. If this truly is the last in the series, I will totally miss all of the crazy promotion. :( I plan to spend ridiculous amounts of money on PotC goodness this summer. I mean, even after PotC3 comes out there's still all that Harry Potter craziness to look forward to ... but c'mon. I think we all know that PotC is the better of the two. ;)
And so, with so little time left to go before I get to sit down and watch the third movie, here is a completely ridiculous entry that I actually started way back in March, and probably tomorrow I will regret posting it, but that's okay. XD Here are my top ten favourite lines from each of the first two PotC movies. XD
PotC TOP TEN
10.
Will: "That's not good enough!"
I'm sorry, guys, but it turns out that I am a total GIRL, and I love this gushy hero stuff. XD
09.
Jack: "You forgot one very important thing, mate. I'm Captain Jack Sparrow."
This line is so far down on this list because I kind of feel like it's too obvious in its awesomeness and I'm kind of sick of hearing it. I don't know if that makes sense but that's how I feel, hahahaha. XD; But ignoring that, I think this line is pretty awesome and I love the way he delivers it. As if saying "I'm Captain Jack Sparrow" is the same as saying "DUH!!!!" XD XD XD;
08.
Jack: "We're catching up."
This line features the most painful special effect in the entire movie, as far as I'm concerned. Jack does not look like he is standing in the middle of a raging thunderstorm, he looks like he is standing in front of a screen onto which a raging thunderstorm is being projected. :P Maybe it's supposed to be a tribute to the thunderstorm scene in the ride? If so, the ride does it a lot better. I like the rain in PotC2 so much more than the rain in PotC, which is good, because there's a lot more of it. XD;
I guess I had to write the above paragraph in order to make it look like I had anything worthwhile to say about this line. Because ... I don't. I just think it's the bee's knees. ;D It's like, woohoo, we're in an adventure movie, this is exciting, stuff is gonna happen soon, PIRATES!!!!! XD Nearly every time I watch this movie with someone they ask, "How does Jack know they're catching up?" To which I say, stop picking on my favourite lines!!! :(
07.
Prisoner: "My sympathies, friend. You've no manner of luck at all."
I love this pseudo-poetic dialogue that PotC sometimes employs. Whether it's actually as poetic as I think is up for debate, I'm sure, but either way I love this line, the only line from a minor character to make it onto the list. ;D
06.
Barbossa: "Not you. We named the monkey Jack."
I love this line because it is hilarious and I never would have expected it. XD I mean, it's so ridiculous, isn't it? How does PotC get away with including not only this line, but the "human hair" line as well?? hahaha, I love it. And of course the brilliant piece of acting the monkey does during this line is pretty fantastic, too. XD
05.
Norrington: "You are without doubt the worst pirate I've ever heard of."
Jack: "But you have heard of me."
As someone who hopes to one day be a wee little bit famous, I think Jack's line is awesome. XD Like, who cares why you know my name, all that matters is that you do, and so somewhere along the line I must have done something right. XD; I always forget this line exists but then I watch the movie again and there's that awesome line! ;D
04.
Jack: "... and then I'll shout the name back to you."
I just find this plan to be inherently hilarious. That's all. XD
03.
Jack: "Human hair. From my back."
Do I even have to write anything here? This line is a riot! XD It's so facetious and kind of gross but at the same time it's not really treated as though it is. And it's just so ridiculous, hahaha, I love it. And their faces!! Jack is all serious and Will is kind of "uh ..." and meanwhile Gibbs has the most perfect expression, I can't even describe it. Just watch him the next time you watch this scene, it's too excellent. XD
02.
Jack: "Sticks and stones, love. I saved your life, you save mine, we're square."
I am a total sucker for proverbs half-said, and I don't even know why, hahaha. XD Because it makes me feel smart that I can recognize them? hahaha, MAYBE! XD; For the same reason, I like Barbossa's "Waste not," and of course the line I picked for number one on this list. :)
I also like this line because it is Jack being totally piratey and kind of ruthless and frightening, which is awesome in its rarity, and at the moment he says this, the background music is starting to swell in preparation for the imminent wacky chase scene. Why am I trying to justify putting this line on the list? It's Jack! Being piratey! Doesn't that alone make it awesome? El oh el oh el~ ;D
01.
Barbossa: "And the apples, one of those next."
Elizabeth: "... It's poisoned."
Apologies to
the_wykydtron and
athena_crikey, who have already had to put up with my endless fangirling about this exchange. But I still can't even get over how awesome I think this is; without ever even coming close to mentioning the source, the writers used the story of Snow White to convince Elizabeth the food is poisoned as well as to make it very clear to the audience why she would think that. This is seriously one of those things I wish I had thought of for my own writing, and in a way I'm surprised it's not more common -- an apple as a symbol of death, it seems like such a strange thing, but at the same time it's from such a hugely popular fairy tale that it's not strange at all. And even if you don't have fairy tales on the brain and don't immediately think, "Aha! She thinks the apple is poisoned because of Snow White!," I think it still plays all right ... Does it? I don't know, haha, even the very first time I saw this scene I thought, "Snow White! That's BRILLIANT!!" XD XD XD
And so I also love the scene in which Barbossa tells Elizabeth that he plans to eat a whole bushel of apples right after the curse is lifted. I love that it sounds sort of threatening at the same time as it's totally not. XD But in a movie where apples are symbols of death, I guess "eat a whole bushel of apples" could well be a euphemism for "die," and that's exactly what Barbossa does. XD;;;
I actually have more to this reading of the apple symbolism but I think even what I've written above is perhaps reading the film way more seriously than it was ever meant to be read, so I'll spare you the rest for now. XD
PotC2 TOP TEN
10.
Beckett: "So you see, Mercer, every man has a price he will willingly accept, even for what he hoped never to sell."
I feel way guilty for including this line! This scene is sad and mean and I don't want Governor Swann to be sad even if he spends this entire movie hating on Will! :( But Beckett has to be on this list because, as with Bootstrap, I love the way he talks. "Bargain," hahaha, I love that line. XD
I will have to think of something clever to say about this line later, or something, because right now it is just not coming to me. :/ FAIL.
09.
Elizabeth: "Jack. Are you telling the truth?"
I hate the fact that she actually believes he's telling the truth and on Isla Cruces is all upset that he wasn't, because DUH!!!! But I really like this line by itself, I like how it fits into the scene and I like the way she delivers it. Am I even allowed to say that? I sometimes feel like I'm the only person in the world who doesn't live to bash Keira Knightley. :P
08.
Jack: "Hard to starboard?"
Elizabeth: "HARD TO STARBOARD!"
Not sure why I like this one so much ... Maybe because of the contrast? Hahaha, I think too hard about this stuff. But I like this echoed command as a segue into the chase sequence. It's like the scene is on one level of excitement, or whatever, and then Elizabeth repeats the command in a scream and suddenly it's like IMMEDIATE DANGER!!!!! Desperation! How exciting! hahaha.
Man, I dunno. I just like this part. I also get a kick out of the reversed "What?" "What!" echo on Isla Cruces ... but not enough to include it in this list. ;)
07.
Norrington: "Don't wait for me."
Oh, my write-up for this one is completely ruined by the fact that the Seinfeld finale was on today, and Elaine says this exact same thing to Puddy, to which Puddy says, "Okay." HAHAHAHA if I was a shipper I would totally ship Elaine/Puddy simply because together they are the height of hilarity. (Do Seinfeld shippers exist? I think this is a Google search I do not want to make.)
Anyway, what was I talking about? Pirates? I love Norrington's "Don't wait for me" because it is SO bitter, even though the moment he says it is one of his best in the movie (in that he has the heart and is on his way to achieving his goal of redemption), and isn't that often used as a romantic line? As in the Seinfeld episode? So by saying it the way he does it's like, he already knows Elizabeth isn't going to wait for him, she totally dumped him before. But at the same time it is a functional line. And blah blah blah really I am just rambling while I wait for
the_wykydtron to write something more concise and intelligent about this line, because apparently I am failing! XD;
06.
Davy Jones: "Bootstrap Bill, you're a liar and you will spend an eternity on this ship!"
I have no idea why I like this line so much. Davy Jones is just that awesome. I love how ANGRY he sounds, hahaha. I mean, I guess he did just lose the chance to keep Will on his ship forever, but it always takes me a moment to remember that, and I always wanna be all, "It's just a GAME, Davy, calm down!" XD;;;
So ... yeah. I like this line. It's cool.
05.
Bootstrap Bill: "I could say I did what I had to when I left you to go pirating. But it would taste a lie to say it wasn't what I wanted."
How ridiculous is it that even a year after first seeing this movie, I can't watch this scene without practically seeing Cassim and Aladdin in Bootstrap and Will's places? I don't know why I have this issue! I think it's because the first time I saw the movie I was like, "Hur hur hur, Cassim gives Aladdin a knife, too," and it just went downhill from there. And so now if they kill Bootstrap off I am going to cry my eyes out because they might as well just kill Cassim. AUGH WHATEVER!!!#!!4211$!!
The first time I saw PotC2, I didn't like Bootstrap very much. He just was not how I expected him to be, and I was still bitter that they brought him into the movies instead of just having him be dead like he was supposed to be, and so it took me a while to get over those complaints. Now I quite like Bootstrap. :) Or at least I like the way he talks. All the sorta poetic things he says! "Taste a lie," "drawn with ravenous hunger" ... well, to me at least they sound poetic. And his "You look good, Jack" line is excellent too. And so this line makes the list because of its sorta poeticness and because it totally reminds me of Cassim. This is what King of Thieves would have been like if Ted and Terry had written it, perhaps. (And oh man that would have been AWESOME.)
When I first heard this line, I totally heard "partying" instead of "pirating," and so even now when I hear this line I picture confetti. HAHAHA my brain!!!!
04.
Tia Dalma: "But if you go brave the weird and haunted shoals at world's end ... then you will need a captain ... who knows those waters."
(I thought she was saying "if you gon' brave," like a contraction of "going to" or something, but the Internet disagrees with me. :( I like my version better! Grr!!)
I could pretty well quote anything Tia Dalma says here, because I just totally dig her accent and her delivery of EVERYTHING. My brother says she is impossible to understand, but I say that's a small price to pay for being so AWESOME. XD XD XD I guess I will quote this line because it is Barbossa's cue and so by this point in the movie I am always thinking, "Hahaha, YES, this is the best ending in CINEMA HISTORY!!!!!!" and it is awesome. XD XD XD Another line of hers that I particularly like is "Same story, different version - and all are true!" She sounds so offended when she says it! Hahaha, I love it. XD She should totally come to UVic and teach a class on, like, folklore, haha. XD
Tia Dalma, I hope you manage to stay awesome in PotC3. <3
03.
Norrington: "You haven't said where you're going. Somewhere nice?"
Norrington in PotC is, to me, not all that interesting. He's just some boring dude I can't really be bothered to care about. But Norrington in PotC2 is A+++. To me this is his best line. The way he delivers it is perfect. Hahaha, Norrington is getting to be very good at saying "ARGH I HATE YOU AND I'M SO ANGRY AT EVERYTHING!!!!" without actually saying it. XD;
02.
Will: "Where is the key?"
Wyvern: "Hidden."
Will: "Where is the chest."
Wyvern: "Hidden."
I feel like a huge dork for putting this one so high up. Like, why do I like it so? I can't even say! The first time I saw the movie it didn't impress me all that much. I thought Wyvern was kind of gratuitous CGI. But now I really like this exchange. Wyvern's bizarre, almost desperate rambling versus Will's pressing for a more tangible answer. I feel like this is a terrible explanation of why I like these lines but that's the best I can do. :(
And I also really like how Wyvern gets his last line, then there's a rush of music that ends right as the movie cuts to Tortuga. Hahaha, if this was a list of my favourite edits in the movie, I think there would be this moment, and the moment where Jack, Elizabeth and Norrington are walking across the sands on Isla Cruces, and the moment where Will realizes someone has opened the chest (does that last one count as an edit? it does if I say it does!!) ...
(The first however many times I saw this movie, I thought Wyvern's second "Hidden" was actually a "It, too," but a little muffled due to his movement. The subtitles say "Hidden" but I dunno, I still like "It, too" better. So I still pretend that's what he says. :P )
01.
Davy Jones: "You are neither dead nor dying! What is your purpose here?"
Will: "Jack Sparrow ... sent me to settle his debt."
Davy Jones: "What is your purpose here?"
Will: "Jack Sparrow? ... sent me to settle his debt."
Davy Jones: "Did he now? I'm sorely tempted to accept that offer!"
I might as well just quote this entire scene here, hahaha. XD With PotC I find it very difficult to pick one scene out as my favourite (the only exception being Jack's introduction, which is kind of boring to have as a favourite scene because it's EVERYONE'S favourite scene), but the tone and quality of PotC2 varies more and so I find it pretty easy to be like, yep, this is my favourite scene. (Actually, thinking back a bit, that shot of Will carrying the lantern onto the broken ship was, to me, the most intriguing shot of the trailer. So I guess I know what I like? Or ... something.) I love the way Davy Jones' voice changes depending on his mood and what effect he's deliberately going for, I love the pained expressions on Will's face as he, for once, says what Jack told him to say ... everything in this scene adds up to me thinking these five lines are the best in the whole movie, even though two of them are repeats. XD!! When I first saw this movie I didn't even like Davy Jones. Like, at all. I thought he was pretty boring, for a supposedly tortured villain. I could see that the CGI was superb but that was about it. But now I think he is awesome. All his quirks and his way of speaking and everything! XD And I really like Will in this movie. So these five lines to me are A+! :D
Unrelated to PotC, believe it or not, last night I watched the last hour of Amadeus (which I haven't watched in so long!), then this morning my prof read an article in which someone saying "There are too many students in university" was compared to Amadeus' Emperor Joseph saying "There are too many notes," then we watched The Big Lebowski which was really not my kind of movie at all but which featured the "Lacrimosa" from Mozart's Requiem Mass and it really threw me off because what is that music doing in a scene that is not all depressing and sad?? But anyway, these three little events all together just reminded me how some weeks I feel like my entire life is made up of stupid coincidences. XD I dig it!
And so, with so little time left to go before I get to sit down and watch the third movie, here is a completely ridiculous entry that I actually started way back in March, and probably tomorrow I will regret posting it, but that's okay. XD Here are my top ten favourite lines from each of the first two PotC movies. XD

I remember however long ago hearing about The Golden Compass being made into a movie, I didn't know there was a trailer out! I shall have to watch it, I'm really curious now. :D
And I'm glad you like "pseudo-poetic," hahaha, I was afraid someone was going to call me out on it. "That's not a word!" or "That's not poetic!" or something like that. XD haha!
