So around the end of last semester (if not before), [livejournal.com profile] leaf_green and I were talking about how we should do some song translations to practice our Japanese, and we should post them in our LJs so we could correct each other. And then we didn't do it. UNTIL NOW!! XD XD XD

I must warn you: this is NOT the most beautiful translation you will ever see. I know I am not destined to become a translator because I don't really enjoy going back over a translation to make it sound pretty. I feel like if I manage to get the general idea, I must be doing pretty good. XD

I'm not really posting this with the expectation that people will correct it, but if you do find terrible mistakes, feel free to tell me. XD Haha, I feel really dorky posting this ... like everyone will finally discover just how little Japanese I actually know. XD XD;

Okay so anyway! XD This is my unpretty attempt at a translation of the lyrics of my favourite song off of 7.5 Fuyu Fuyu Morning Musume. Mini!, "KOTATSU no uta ~jyuken story~," which you can listen to on YouTube, if you want. XD;

Edit: And the Otomegocoro performance of the song (which is sorta why I was thinking about it again) can be seen on Veoh. :D Yossie sings the wrong line at one point but I forgive her because she totally makes this performance. XD

        Song About the Heater ~Story of the Student Preparing for Exams~ [[haha okay shut up about the title!!]]

Ridiculous Notes

I don't know what is up with the tense in this stanza. If it's just something I'm not understanding, or if it really does shift, after being present tense in 6 and 7, into past and then back into present.

Also I have no idea how to translate 声掛けられた koe kakerareta so that it's passive in English. "A voice was called out"?? Well, probably no one would use passive for that in English anyway ... right? XD;;

The only definition I've found for 開く hiraku is "to open," but its kanji is part of 満開 mankai "full bloom" (as in 桜満開 sakura mankai, which happens to be the title of another MoMusu song, el oh el) so I felt like maybe I could get away with translating 開く as "bloom" ... ^^;

Oh, and now I've just realized that 開く is transitive so I guess translating it as "bloom" is wrong. But I don't know how to fix it ... it seems like it should be intransitive in that line, am I just not thinking about it right? "I'll open flowers"??? Hrm ... :p

I'm also not sure whether the そのうち sono uchi is intended as "eventually" or if it instead refers to, like, the time when the girl will fall in love again. Something like, "The next time I fall in love, flowers will bloom" instead of "The next time I fall in love, eventually flowers will bloom." I used "eventually" because the dictionary had a whole whack definitions to suit that meaning, but I'm still not sure ... I like the other translation better, I just don't know if it's actually right or not. :( (Am I overthinking this? Haha, probably.)
