Man, my brother has been totally nice to me today. It makes me not want to leave, hahaha. XD His semester has switched over and so I've been helping him with his Spanish homework the past couple of days. I'm glad to see I can still do it! :) I took two third-year Spanish lit. classes last year (which means I've read part of Don Quixote in the original, this is my only accomplishment in life hehe), but I haven't taken any this year. I do quite like Spanish, it's just that when I let UVic know I got a 4 on the AP exam, it messed everything up ... But this helping my brother with his homework makes me want to read my Harry Potter y el Prisionero de Azkaban again, hehehe. XD Gosh, HP in Spanish is so much better than in the original, I can't even explain it. I think it's just because it makes it seem more exotic, but not enough that I can no longer understand it. And I like the deeper voices of the Spanish dub. <3 And it just really fascinated me the first time I watched it in Spanish dub, which is probably also part of it, haha. Haha, man, now I really want to watch PoA in Spanish again, but I can't, I should really go to bed soon, hehehe. XD;

When I was in middle school, one of my friends told me I talk about my brother an awful amount. Haha, do I? I don't feel like I do ... XD;;;

He keeps getting "muy" and "mucho" confused, like a lot of Spanish learners seem to do. Which is something I've never really understood, it's not like "por" and "para" where they translate into the same English word ... but okay, haha.

I feel like I should make this a fantastic entry because it's my last before Disneyland. ^^; But as you can see it's not going so well! XD So I am going to leave you with some unfinished rambling about Escaflowne AMVs. XD I wrote this in the wee hours of Christmas morning but apparently after the holiday I completely forgot about it, only to rediscover it today when I was pretending to write my kyogen essay. XD And I never even wrote about the "Because of You" video I was going to write about! hahaha. XD

Esca + Moulin Rouge's "El Tango de Roxanne"
[Spoilers, mostly from episode nineteen. There are clips from after nineteen but I'm not convinced you can tell what's going on in them if you haven't seen those episodes.]

This is probably the best Esca video I have seen. It really looks like a lot of work went into it. There are so many different scenes all layered in together, and it all matches the music so well. The structure is really interesting because there are a bunch of clips from episodes before nineteen (well, okay, mostly they're clips from before nineteen), and then episode nineteen is used over top the instrumental part (the part where "Chain" swells in the episode is matched to the part where the chorus swells in "Tango"), and then the rest of the clips are from after nineteen (well, mostly!!). Like it's the story of the main Esca love triangle all nicely condensed into a four-minute fan video. But it's so good! There are a lot of videos out there that just use clips from the series in order, which is fine but kind of boring, and though in general this video does that too, there's definitely more of a plan behind it, and it's really good.

The lyrics of the song don't 100% fit the series ("Roxanne"? prostitution?), but I think the part they have Van lipsynch does, well enough. (Aaaah, it kills me when videos have Van lipsynching. It just seems so ridiculous to me, hahahahaha. I dunno. XD; ) Well, even if the lyrics don't really match, I think the feel of the song matches the feel of the video, so it all evens out I say. XD

Here is something that has been bugging me since I saw it in that "Superman (It's Not Easy)" video I can't find anymore -- at 1:19, between the clip of Van's sword shaking from episode fifteen and the clip of Hitomi trying to get Van to use his psychic powerz from episode eleven, there is a clip of Van crying, and where on earth is that from? Because it's not from the series, as far as I can tell. The only place I can think of that it might be from is the Playstation game footage that I believe is on the DVDs as an extra. But then I guess it surprises me that people use that footage for their videos! Hahaha. I hope to solve this mystery one day.

Oh man, even though [livejournal.com profile] athena_crikey tried to make me feel better about it, I think I would still feel better about myself as a person if my favourite parts of this series didn't involve my favourite character getting beat up. XD; (At 2:49, Van is pretty well feeling his heart being pulled out of his chest, and that is my favourite part of that episode. But then ... that's exposition dump episode eighteen ... so maybe I'm not as much of a psycho as I think.) I guess those are the parts where it's like, HIGH TENSION!! EXCITING STORY!!, but still! Poor kid! Why do you insist on beating him up all the time?? XD;;;

Escamovie + Aqua's "My Oh My"
[Movie spoilers~~.]

Okay, I don't know why I like this video so much. I cannot even justify it. I mean, the song is by Aqua. The same people who did "Barbie Girl." And yet I think this video is awesome. Oh Sarah, when will you learn? XD;;;

The lyrics don't really match the story but I suppose you could pretend they do if you wanted. I like how, when the man starts to sing, that clip of Van smiling before the movie's opening massacre is used. I am sort of kind of beginning to think that that clip is much cooler in music videos than it is in the actual movie. ^^;

I don't even have anything else of any substance to say about this video, hahaha. It just makes me think "Escaflowne is AWESOME!!!" and that is good enough for me, I guess. XD;;; Well, here, let me come up with something else to say. The line the song ends on, "If you were my king / I would be your queen." If you take the end of the series (and the movie I guess) as final and decide that Van/Hitomi never end up together, I think that's interesting. Because it's all well and good to say that Hitomi never ends up with anyone else, but Van has to, doesn't he? Because he's a king who needs an heir and probably whatever advisors he has aren't going to let him be like his father, who didn't have kids till he was fifty or something ridiculous like that. We saw how well that turned out. :P But I don't know about Hitomi. I've always got the vibe that the series is telling us that Van and Hitomi are bound by fate or whatever and are the only ones for each other. But you know how well I understand the fate parts of the series, I could be easily making that up. And another thing I'm confused about ... I think at one point I must have read a fan site or a fanfic or something that talked about how the series said that Van and Hitomi couldn't end up together because it would mean trouble for Gaea. I know that there's episode nineteen, where Dornkirk & co. try to split them apart because when the dragon and the girl are together, Dornkirk can't see the future, there's chaos for the future, etc. etc. ... but does their being together really affect the entire world? Is that the point of the series and I'm just an idiot? There are plenty of fanfics that bring them back together, but is that wrong? Does it go against what the series says? I dunno ... to me, bringing Hitomi back to Gaea or whatever kind of feels like cheating, because the series ends with her leaving. But at the same time, I do really like Van/Hitomi.

This reminds me of Aladdin, so I'll start a new paragraph so you can skip it. XD In the Aladdin episode "Elemental, My Dear Jasmine," Jasmine asks Aladdin if he dated other girls before her (ahaha this series is so Western in so many ridiculous ways), and he says he dated tons. (And then she gets mad at him, even though she's the one who decided to ask such a brilliant question, ahahaha, siiiiiiigh.) And when I was younger, I always thought he was lying to make himself look popular. Either that or I decided I would simply deny that he was telling the truth. But six years later I'm like, so? So what if he dated girls before her? And rather than being annoyed by the fandom theories that he was at one time quite the player (note that he has a knack for flirting but is terrible when it comes to long-term relationship things like remembering anniversaries, hahahaha), I find them really interesting and amusing. And in the same way, I could think, "Oh, maybe Hitomi will never return to Gaea for whatever reason and maybe she'll find another guy" and it doesn't seem as heinous an idea as it did when I was younger and still perhaps thought Disney-type romances were the norm. XD I mean, [livejournal.com profile] athena_crikey and I once read a fic where Van and Celena got together a year or however long after Hitomi left, and it wasn't a totally terrible thing, just kind of bittersweet I guess. But still ... I think being cool with Al dating girls before Jasmine is easier than being cool with Hitomi or Van dating other people after the end of the series. ^^;;

Ahahaha, I feel like such a total lamer whenever I talk about the romantic lives of fictional characters. But shut up! Van and Hitomi should be together! You jerk!! XD XD XD XD;;;

Escamovie + Madonna's "Sorry"
[Movie spoilers~~.]

I don't really know why I am linking this song. I have no idea why you would associate this song with the Esca movie and I have no idea what the video is trying to tell me. Probably, then, I am only linking it because I think the song is kind of catchy. Allow me, then, to use this space to talk about something completely different.

In grade twelve I pretended to read Jane Eyre. Most of the reason I couldn't stand that book was because it seemed to me to be little more than a series of progressively more ridiculous secrets, loosely strung together. Oh, she's a he! Oh, he has an illegitimate child! Oh, he has a crazy wife in the attic! Oh, we're related! Oh snap now he's blind! But at the same time ... what more is the Escaflowne series than a series of ridiculous secrets revealed? Oh, he's a traitor! Oh, he has wings! Oh, he has an illegitimate child! Oh, he's a she! How can I possibly justify my adoration for Esca while maintaining my annoyance with Jane Eyre? The only thing I have come up with is that in Eyre, pretty well all of the ridiculous secrets pertain to Mr. Rochester, who probably reveals like twenty-five more every day at breakfast. But in Escaflowne the ridiculousness is spread across the cast, so everyone has their little secret and once it's out that's it. AND NOBODY IN ESCAFLOWNE KEEPS A CRAZY WIFE IN THE ATTIC, I STILL CAN'T EVEN GET OVER HOW WACKY THAT IS!!!! XD XD XD;;;;;;

And with that, I shall see you all next Sunday! Have an awesome week! XD XD XD XD
