I vote that one of my goals for 2010 should be to learn more about older J-pop, because I kind of love it even though, at the moment, everything I know about it I learned from Hello! Project's increasing selection of song covers. xD
Linda Yamamoto - "Dou ni mo Tomaranai"
I've linked to this video before but I'm linking to it again. Everything about it is awesome! I'm actually kind of distraught that I've yet to find another Linda Yamamoto song that I like half as much as this one.
Pink Lady - "Southpaw"
Pink Lady took a long time to grow on me (at first I even disliked Morning Musume's cover of their song "Pepper Keibu"), but now I kind of love them. I also really like "Nagisa no Sindbad" and "UFO."
Kirara to Urara - "Senti-Metal Boy"
(The performance starts at 1:34.) This is actually the first time I've heard the original version of this song, despite the fact that I've been searching for it forever! W's cover of this song is my favourite song off their album of covers, which you are totally allowed to judge me for. If it makes the song any less weird for you, the "tsuu tsuu" parts are supposed to be morse code. xD
Betsy & Chris - "Shiroi Iro wa Koibito no Iro"
Two Americans that were a J-pop duo! I usually don't go for slower songs, but this one is soooooo gorgeous that I can't help but love it. W's cover is also really pretty, and I was really surprised to find that Hayley Westenra has an English language cover that actually isn't half bad!
Finger 5 - "Koi no Dial 6700"
I actually much prefer Morning Musume's version of this song, but I am linking to the original because in January I compared this group to the Jackson 5, and I have just had a great lol upon discovering that the first line of their Wikipedia entry is, in fact, The Finger Five are inevitably described as "the Japanese Jackson Five." Boo, I don't feel clever anymore! xD
Amin - "Matsu Wa"
I am including this one only to say that at this point at least, I like W's version quite a bit better.
The Peanuts - "Koi no Vacance"
I was once watching a Morning Musume concert with
the_wykydtron, and when W came on to perform their version, she declared it to be a terrible song. To which I say, HDU THIS SONG IS AMAZING!!! Also, to steal Project Hello's translation, this song includes the line Let's love in bare flesh like mermaids, so how could you hate it I don't even understand. Unrelated, I also really like "Koi no Fugue."
I am always amused when people say their favourite kind of music is music that makes them think, because I continue to most enjoy music that you're not supposed to think about at all. xD Which is not to say that I don't think about it, but. You know.
