So earlier this year I watched Escaflowne after not watching it for three years, and as I watched I typed out a bunch of observations I had because that is how much of a total dork I am. But anyway, I was reading over these observations earlier today after not touching them since May, and, as I usually do when I reread my writing, I was totally cracking up. Oh my goodness, past!Sarah is so hilarious, she should go into stand-up, or, like, something.
Watch out for spoilers!
A choice snippet:
I like when odd sets of characters end up together. Like in episode sixteen when Allen and Hitomi run out of the room so Dryden is left reading the journal to Van and Merle and Millerna, that's kind of an odd group. Or in eighteen when Van and Hitomi and Allen disappear and leave everyone else to their own devices. Because you look at that shot of Merle and Millerna and Dryden and Gadeth and it's like MAN, you guys! Way to lose your main characters! NOW what are you gonna do? Fight for superiority? Because I'm pretty sure Merle could take any of you.
Keep in mind that this keen observation is directly followed by:
OH MAN IT'S THE BUG ZAP EPISODE!!! zzzzrgphf!!!
I like this one too:
It seems like after episode seventeen what Allen and Van (and Hitomi) saw while in the tree (aheheh) is never brought up again. But surely they must have mentioned it, such a wacky experience like that! I imagine an awkward conversation on the way back to Palas. "So," says Van, "what did YOU see while in the tree?" "Saw my house," says Allen, "saw my dad. Had a little chat, little family reunion. Witnessed his death and all that. It was good. What about you?" "Well," says Van, "I got to talk with Balgus. We discussed genetics. It was lovely." "Balgus?!" says Allen. "How come YOU got Balgus?!" "Heh," says Van. "I guess he just likes me better." And this conversation is the source of all the tension between them for the rest of the series. It's true.
And here we have Allen being Allen:
That scene in episode twelve where Millerna's like "Allen, I have something I want to ask you" and then THEY JUST STARE AT EACH OTHER FOR FIVE MINUTES? Oh my god, awkwaaaaard. I wish they had given her SOMETHING to say there, even if it was just an "uhmmm" or something, because man. I think it would be a hilarious thing if she was actually going to ask him about, like, what he wanted for lunch, or something. I mean, I don't think it's a good thing for him to go around being all "Oh, you wanted to ask me something? It must be about my torrid love affair with your sister!" I mean, I don't know how he's managed to keep it a secret all these years if he starts going off about it every time he gets Marlene on the brain.
And the end of this one makes me laugh:
I am interested in making a list of who knows about the Allen and Chid thing. So let's. Allen and Marlene, we know they know because they both say as much. Millerna knows because she reads it and gets confirmation from Allen. Hitomi knows because Allen tells her -- I guess she doesn't fully realize it during the reading she did for Chid. The Duke of Freid never admits to knowing but I think it's pretty clear that he does. I would argue that Merle knows Allen is a father, judging from her "how obvious" comment during the girl talk scene of episode fifteen, although whether or not she realizes the son is Chid is up for debate. I do wonder if Eries or Aston know. I mean, a lot of people figure Allen was posted in such a remote area in order to keep him out of trouble, which suggests to me that Aston had some idea what was going on, although maybe he doesn't know how far it got. I also wonder whether or not Allen will tell Serena. You could say he will because he tells Hitomi during his phase where he's confusing her with Serena ... but at the same time it probably depends on how stable Serena actually turns out to be. I wonder if Gadeth knows, haha. He never indicates he does, far as I can tell, and I don't know if Allen would have had a reason for telling him. Although if he ever does get the urge to go blabbing, I think he'd be pretty safe telling Van -- that boy spends most of the series keeping one secret or another, after all. That kid is like a vault.
Hahaha, don't you guys love how I use my LJ to write about, like, my LIFE? Ahahaha. Yes, excellent. I spent the last two hours watching Full House, because I am going through my VHS tapes and labelling them all good and proper. (I can't believe I taped over the Papouli episode, that's like my favourite one. ;_; ) And I was thinking: in recent years, Bob Saget has told the dirtiest joke in The Aristocrats, Mary-Kate Olsen has been brunette/bulimic/on drugs, and now John Stamos is playing the part of a gay wedding planner*. Does anyone else think now is the perfect time for a Full House reunion? I HOPE I'M NOT ALONE IN THIS!!!
* Well, obviously the fact that he is playing the part of a gay wedding planner does not bug me. I am only bugged by how I keep catching him on talk shows making dirty puns. Each time I am like, "Nooooo~, Uncle Jesse~~~!!!!," and the heart of five-year-old Sarah breaks just a little bit more.
Watch out for spoilers!
