surrounded by enormous piles of money
Jan. 17th, 2011 12:11 amQuick and random entry!
- So the work drama does indeed seem to be over. I don't much feel like job hunting in the middle of the semester so it looks like I'll be sticking with this job till spring, whatever. In related news, it seems that JET applicants should start hearing about interviews either this week or next week, aaaaaah!
- My favourite ESL teacher wants me to volunteer in her class again!! \o/ My mom is not a fan of this idea because she wants me to spend the time studying instead, but man I have been missing volunteering!
- Another thing I have been missing: NaNoWriMo!! :( I srsly need to find time to write this week because not writing is driving me crazy. (Especially when I have four classes in which we're discussing written works, something that always makes me want to write my own!) A former manager and I came up with the idea that I should write 30,000 words in the month between my birthday and Valentine's Day, but yeah I definitely haven't started that yet ... :/
- I somehow managed to convince my parents to go see Tangled with me today, even though we had to drive to the next town over (and pay for our tickets?!) to do so! But they both quite liked it, which to be honest I hadn't expected. They usually prefer to make fun of the things I watch. :P My dad was asking me questions about the plot afterwards though ... Disney movies are too complicated for him I guess!
- I made it my goal this week to finish reading On Stranger Tides by Tim Powers and I finally did! It's a novel about a puppeteer who becomes a pirate, meets Blackbeard, visits the Fountain of Youth, learns a little magic, gets really drunk, and has all sorts of swashbuckling adventures. I don't think I got as much out of it as I would've had it not taken me months and months to read it (which is more a comment on my ridiculous reading habits than on the quality of the book), but I really enjoyed it. The only real complaint I have is that the love story is pretty pastede on. Other than that, it's really well written, with interesting worldbuilding and a really neat magic system. There seems to be very little info right now about why Disney optioned this book and what exactly they've taken from it for use in the next Pirates movie; at first I was thinking that the young man and woman briefly seen in the trailer would be the equivalent of the book's Jack Shandy and Beth Hurwood (although with new first names, natch!), but the Tim Powers interview that's floating around indicates that Jack Sparrow will be filling the role of Jack Shandy ... and I really have no idea how that would work! Well maybe then Angelica will somehow be the movie's version of Beth, and the book's Blackbeard and Benjamin Hurwood will be combined into the movie's Blackbeard (although the Tim Powers interview has him speculating that his Blackbeard character will be split between the movie's Blackbeard and Barbossa) ... really I have no idea! It will be very interesting to see what they've done. I'm mainly hoping that some of the magic from the book will show up in the movie because that was definitely my favourite part. (The awesome zombies from the book don't seem to have made it into the movie as I would have liked them to, but the movie adds mermaids so maybe it'll even itself out haha.)
(Also, I was really surprised to find that this is not at all a kids' book. I mean, I got through it so obviously it wasn't 18A or anything, but - yeah. Not a kids' book.)
I have now started reading The Republic of Pirates, a non-fiction book about the time period in which all this awesome fictional stuff takes place. It mentions both Captain Blood and Jack Sparrow in the very first paragraph, so obviously I am going to love it. xD
