You might recall that in a previous sponsorship entry, I mentioned asking Children International if any of the families of my sponsored children would be interested in starting what CI calls an Income Generating Project - basically a little business that could bring the family more income. One of the first replies I received was from Liset's family. I realize I haven't written about Liset yet, despite the fact that I've been sponsoring her for almost a year. She lives in Colombia and she recently turned fourteen, making her one of the oldest of my sponsored children.
The reply regarding an IGP for Liset's family reads: After consulting with Liset and her family, her field worker has informed us that Liset's mother used to sell vegetables out of her house, and she feels she would be successful doing that again. After I received a reply from each of the families, I decided I would fund the projects starting with the least expensive one, and so Liset's was first! Here are the pictures (hosted by Photobucket). :)
From CI's letter: I am happy to tell you that Liset's field worker purchased items your child and her family needed in order to start their own home-based business of selling fruits, vegetables, and other foods, such as oil, rice, and meat. ... I hope you enjoy the enclosed pictures that were taken when your gifts were delivered.
Liset's father abandoned the family; Liset, her mother, and her two siblings live with relatives, and their monthly income is less than half that of my other Colombian sponsored children. So hopefully Liset's mother is successful in this project, and hopefully it helps them out.
From Liset's letter: Let me tell you I am doing well at school. In my free time I like to share with my friends and my favorite sport is baseball. I am in fourth grade. ... I thank you for the gift you sent me, because thanks to this my mother could arrange a stand where she plans to sell vegetables like coriander, celery, tomatoes, onions and fruits like pineapple, passion fruit, oranges, potatoes, and everything in harvest. (Oh Liset, potatoes aren't a fruit! ^^; )
I like Liset's pictures; she always looks really cheerful and outgoing. :D
So unless anyone wants to see some new annual photos, haha, I guess that's all for now. When I get an update on the project I'll let you know! Liset's family record isn't due to be updated for a while so I'll have to ask her how it's going. Meanwhile, I've already sent the funds for the project Kelvin's family wanted to start. I am really excited about this one because his family's income has yet to move from seven dollars a month - so I'm definitely hoping this will help them out! But now begins the agonizing two-month wait for the report~. xD;
Oh, one more thing! I don't even remember when this happened now but the first Kiva loan I was part of has been paid back. As soon as my $25 came back to me, I sent it out again. My lender page is slowly filling up, haha! xD

I seem to have been kind of unlucky in that there's a journal-type feature on the site where the business owners can update about their business and what they've done with the loan they received, but neither of the loans I've been a part of have made use of this! And I mean whatever, it's not a huge deal to me, but it does mean I tend to forget about Kiva for long stretches of time. I mean yes, I definitely think Kiva is a great help for people living in poor countries; it may well be more helpful for them than child sponsorship is. But I definitely miss having that connection to the person that you're helping.
So, I mean, if your question is does Kiva help people and is it a good site and whatever, my answer is YES. But for purely selfish reasons, it is not my favourite. ^^;
