it's a sad sad story when a mother will teach her daughter that she ought to hate a perfect stranger
Three more movies:
9. City of Ember, 2008
This should actually be the first on the list, since I watched it on the plane from Tokyo to Vancouver, but I only just now have remembered to list it. xD; I actually really enjoyed this movie, it's of that family-friendly fantasy genre that I seem to love (see Journey to the Centre of the Earth 3-D xD; ), but afterwards when I was thinking about it I discovered a lot of plot holes. haha oh well, it kept me distracted for an hour and a half and that was really all I wanted. xD
SORRY GUYS, from here on this post is all politics. :P
10. Right America: Feeling Wronged - Some Voices From the Campaign Trail, 2009
Alexandra Pelosi, Nancy Pelosi's daughter, interviewed McCain supporters along the campaign trail, and this documentary is mostly made up of snippets from those interviews. They're not the most in-depth interviews you'll ever hear, and I wasn't really surprised by a lot of what was said, but I think it's still worth a watch, if you're interested. It's only like an hour long and it's been uploaded to YouTube, so. :X
Actually I think the parts I was least surprised by are the parts people seem to be talking about the most - the guy who accused Obama of being a socialist but who could neither spell nor define the word, and the people who were threatening to move to Canada or Spain if Obama won. I confess I don't know any hardcore conservatives personally (or if I do, I don't know it!), but the impression I get of them (which may or may not be correct) is that they don't make a habit of seeking out knowledge of other countries or other ways of thinking. So I wasn't terribly surprised that that guy defined socialism as "what Hitler believed in" (lol, I like to imagine Hitler being quite offended by this), or that those people were threatening to move to countries that tend to be located further left than Obama. :P
The part I was most surprised by, even though I guess I shouldn't have been, was the part where the daughter of the Speaker of the House found a man who told her to her face that if he was in charge, women wouldn't have the vote. How can anyone think this anymore? How can anyone feel like this is an okay thing to say out loud? To a videocamera? This was one instance where I wished she had pressed him for a better reason - his shrug and "That's how old-fashioned I am" was ridiculous. Sorry guys, but feminism is still needed, and here's the proof. As long as there is one person in the world who thinks that someone should be denied the vote because of their genitalia, or their skin colour, or their sexual orientation, then feminism will be needed.
And speaking of women fighting for a voice ...
11. Shut Up and Sing, 2006
I've wanted to see this ever since its release, so lucky for me it was on CMT today. x) It wasn't quite as interesting as I thought it would be, but it was still pretty good. For those of you who haven't heard of it, Shut Up and Sing is a documentary that follows the Dixie Chicks and the backlash they had to deal with after their lead singer said at a concert that she was ashamed of the president. I sorta-kinda followed it while it was happening, just through reading Entertainment Weekly, but I definitely didn't realize just how bad it got for them until I watched this. I know people have different opinions on whether or not celebrities should talk publicly about politics, but wow it is Not Okay that they received a death threat for doing so. On a lesser level, I also don't agree that you should throw out your CDs just because the band did something you didn't like. I mean, obviously that's a personal choice, but it weirds me out! If you enjoy the music then why deprive yourself of it just because the artist said something you don't agree with? I think Michael Richards' infamous rant was absolutely horrible, but I still enjoy watching him in Seinfeld. Maybe that's wrong of me but I like to think it's okay to separate the work from its creator - much like in a Death of the Author kind of way.
Anyway, it was awesome to see how strong the Chicks managed to stay throughout the whole ordeal, and it was awesome that so many scenes featured them not wearing make-up (yes this is important to me x) ), and lol at that woman who laughed when someone mentioned Moose Jaw (why do people always laugh at the perfectly valid names of Canadian cities? ^^; ), and through the entire thing I was wondering what the reaction would be like, or if there would be any reaction at all, if say one day Celine Dion said at a concert that she was ashamed of the prime minister.
MAN I really need to pay more attention to Canadian politics. :X
Also, I want to watch more documentaries. What are some documentaries I should watch? :D
