I'd love to believe this explanation, and would definitely be more satisfied if it were true! There are flaws with it though, as I pointed out to the person who gave it to me.
The way I see it Davy Jones gets tentacles because after ten years he stopped ferrying the dead. I know that Davy Jones said that Tia Dalma "betrayed" him because she wasn't there after the ten years, but I don't think that if she had been he would have been free from the ship. I took it to be that the flying dutchman always needs a captain to ferry the dead- not that it was a curse that could be broken. Who would ferry the dead otherwise?
